Water heater care

Flush it, check it, set it.

4 min read

A little care can extend a water heater's life.

Basics

  • Flush sediment as the manufacturer recommends, often yearly
  • Test the temperature-pressure relief valve per the manual
  • Set the temperature to around 120°F, which the Department of Energy suggests for most homes
  • Watch for rust, leaks or rumbling noises

Safety

Gas water heater work and replacements are jobs for a licensed pro, and often need a permit.
